how did you get into the industry?

What’s the first thing you do when you get into work in the
morning?
Well, now that my ‘office’ is no more than a couple of feet
from my bedroom due to Covid, the first thing I do in the morning is grab a
coffee, sit at my work-from-home desk and catch up on any emails I have missed
overnight.
What’s the most difficult part of your job?
Like many, I would say the most difficult part of my job is
tackling the daily tsunami of emails! I do have a way to manage them, however
it’s only a few seconds of respite before my mailbox is full again.
What do you most enjoy about working in the industry?
Helping retailers and jewellery retailers manage their
businesses more efficiently and seamlessly.
Our outstanding software is real-time, which means that
jewellery retailers can be fast and agile in their business operations.
Tell us something about yourself that none of your
colleagues know?
I’m shy. I have learnt to overcompensate so that nobody
would notice.
What’s your most memorable moment in the industry to date?
Setting up SelectedEPOS – way back in 2001. I scribbled down the idea
for a cloud-based EPoS system on the back of a restaurant napkin! We were the
first (and still the best) cloud-based EPoS system to date.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
‘If it were this easy everyone would be doing it’. This was
shared with me when I was trying to secure the venture capital to start the
business and we had some tough days early on.
Which other company do you most admire?
F.Hinds is one of the only retailers that offers shoppers an
exact time an item will be available to collect in-store, right down to the
minute. It is a fantastic functionality that has become essential for customers
currently.
Which three names in history would you love to have to dinner?
John Peel, the DJ, had a great influence on my musical
tastes. I love the quirkiness of Tom Waits. And the other would be Steve Jobs.
If you won the lottery, what would you buy?
I have always loved Breitling watches, so something like the
Navitimer BO1 Chronograph 46. However, I would struggle to take my Apple iWatch
off my wrist; getting those move streaks (so far on 730 days) and circles are
addictive.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I am a huge cycling enthusiast. I ride most weekends, and
during lockdown I was still able to go cycling which was great.
I am also a fan of the Merseyside band Half Man Half Biscuit
and in ‘normal times’ I would be attending their gigs.
